State Fair...
It's state fair time again. This is one area that Paula and I disagree (and there are very few of them). She hates the fair - although she has only gone once and didn't really give it a college try - I like it.
Growing up I never would have imagined that I would like it. I was not a farm girl, had little interest in farm animals, and could not spend hours contemplating John Deere tractors. Then I actually went. I enjoy watching the people (the freaks really turn out for this stuff), perusing the photography exhibits, watching the horse competitions, watching the herding dog competitions, and eating.
My gawd, the shit they will put on a stick amazes me. Of course, the original state fair food on a stick is the tried and true corn dog. This year's addition to the "stick food" menu is meatballs on a stick. The desserts are the best though - deep-fat-fried Twinkies, Snickers, and Milky Ways. You literally have to sit down after eating a fried candy bar. The world is spinning amidst the sugar rush.
Paula IS going to the fair with me for the Clay Aiken concert though. She said she is fine with the concert and a trip to the beer tents, but she is NOT petting any animals. So much for seeing the prize winning hog.

For years I avoided the fair like the plague. Then we had kids. Now I look forward to it as much as they do. I just hate getting there...the traffic jams, walking a mile to get to the gate, etc. But it's all worth it after getting inside. Have a good time!!
One of my co-workers used to make a trip to the state fair for some strange reason. Not sure why, but if its anything like the Mississippi Valley fair that we just went to, I'm sure its good. We had a great time at the fair here. Went and saw all the animals and took in 2 concerts as well (Brooks and Dunn and Trace Atkins).
Clay Aiken is playing at a fair!! I can't believe it, you guys are so lucky!
This isn't just a fair...this is the granddaddy of all fairs...the Iowa State Fair. The concert lineup is fantastic - Mercy Me, Montgomery Gentry, Clay, Rascal Flatts, Kid Rock, Nickelback, and Brooks & Dunn.
State fairs creep me out. More to the point, carnies creep me out. Cotton candy creeps me out, but not as much as carnies. Don't even get me started on corn dogs. Seriously, don't.
David Foster Wallace has a great essay on the Illinois State Fair in "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again." Check it out. Milk will come out of your nose.
OMG - you are RIGHT about the food, Jen!! Of course - we LOVE IT. Can't stand the rides (haven't been able to since I got "the vertigo" - a family inherited gem of a disorder - I'll post on my blog about it and not take up your space).
We should be having the Tri-State Fair here soon - I had even forgotten it might be fair time. I'll have to ck and see. Never have tried a deep-fried twinkie or candybar - I'm more curious about the frid pickles ?*! - lol - I'll let you know!!! ...osm
frid??? wtf is frid??? goodgawd - if'n ah kood tahp ah mot bay daynejuruss... ahem... that should read F-R-I-E-D - FRIED PICKLES ...osm
Too bad Mom couldn't come with you. I nearly clawed my ears off my head when Dad gave her the Clay Aiken CD for Christmas. :)
